Why your coffee shop needs to serve breakfast alternatives
The death of breakfast cereals could almost be upon us, with fewer and fewer of us actually sitting down to eat cereal with milk; instead opting for cereal in a bar form or even selecting coffee shop muffins as our new morning nourishment.
Changes such as these could open up avenues for new growth in the coffee shop sector, as people themselves with less time on a morning, and instead opting for something quick and available.
It’s not that people are skipping breakfast itself, they are instead choosing a different breakfast form. But how do we as coffee shops capitalise?…
The Grocer magazine found that we, as a nation, have reduced our cereal consumption to the tune of 3,700 tons (8 million lbs / 3356584kg) from 2015 to 2016.
That equates to around £78 million less than the previous year, with the manufacturers slow to offer alternative options, there is plenty of market space to diversify your morning offerings.
“Less people are giving their morning meal a miss with 600,000 fewer Brits skipping breakfast on a weekly basis. Trouble is, makers of cereals are yet to see any benefit,” The Grocer commented.
“It hasn’t helped that more Brits are starting their day with an on the go option rather than sitting down for brekkie.”
There is obviously a large influx the number of Brits eating on the go or out-of-home, with an estimated 13% of breakfast being bought from convenience stores or coffee shops every single day.
Gluten-free options are increasing in popularity, with people making conscious or health decisions to cut out breads and gluten-rich products, it therefore makes sense to consider these options if you are to increase your breakfast food and drink options.
But what to actually offer?
Of course you may already have a range of snack items, but what about morning specific options?
Here’s a few examples of what you could serve quickly and easily to your morning customers:
- Crossiants
- Pan au Chocolat
- Cereal bars / Breakfast cereal bars
- Muffins
- Fruit
- Smoothies
- Breakfast rolls / wraps
- Toast
- Fresh juice
Just a few simple items that can go perfectly with a morning coffee, or alongside another item. Remember, this isn’t a definitive list by any means; but it could help you get ahead of the competition when it comes to morning business.
But remember: Don’t neglect your main focus, top quality coffee and tea.
