Stay well this winter: Have more hot drinks

Stay-well-this-winter---Have-more-hot-drinks

It’s no secret that it gets colder during this time of year, unfortunately we as a species – despite our best efforts with global warming – cannot control the climate or weather systems. Which is probably for the best!

Cold weather can have a major effect on the health of a nation, and if anyone is directly affected by this, it’s the NHS.

So in their infinite health-giving wisdom, the NHS have given out guidance, in which they recommend we drink more hot drinks to keep ourselves healthy this winter…we couldn’t agree more.

Keeping warm is important, as it prevents colds, flu and much more serious health problems including heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and even depression.

Unfortunately the elderly are one of the most susceptible to illness during the colder winter months, but by drinking more hot drinks we can reduce our risk of catching a nasty cold or flu.

Professor Keith Willett, medical director for acute care at NHS England, said: “The NHS is here to help, but there are important things we can all do to take care of ourselves during the winter months.

“It is vital that the most vulnerable people take preventative steps to keep healthy and stay well. We have a high number of A&E attendances over this time that are due to issues which could have been avoided had people asked for medical advice at the first sign of illness.”

For cafes, bars and coffee shops, we are likely to see a spike in visits as people seek to warm up during the winter period.

If the NHS are advising us to drink more hot drinks now the weather is cooling off, then who are we to argue? If you’re a coffee shop, cafe, bar or restaurant, then make sure you are stocked up and ready for the cold snap.

You heard it here. Drink more tea and coffee to help avoid an NHS crisis this winter!
