Perk up your menu and profits with pour-over brewing
Are you looking to stand out from the crowded high street that has begun to fill up with competing coffee shops?
Do you want to adopt a new, cost-effective approach that produces a great-tasting coffee that will set you apart?
If so, think about adding pour-overs to your menu.
Over the past ten years or so, as the coffee industry has become the gargantuan industry that it is today, the pour-over method has risen in popularity. This craze has spread like wildfire in the United States and is a primary factor in the rise of the ‘third wave’ of coffee shops. But, somehow, it hasn’t quite punctured the market on our shores…yet
Inexpensive and easy, it is a popular with domestic brewers who are looking to maximise their at-home coffees. But because of its low overheads, it lends itself perfectly to the commercial sector.
When done correctly, the hand-pour method delivers an exceptionally smooth and cleaning tasting cup which accentuates a coffee’s characteristics and flavours – especially those specialist micro-lots which deserve a little more care and attention.
Simply, all that you – or your barista – need to do is carefully grind and weigh the beans before placing them inside a filter that’s fitted into a coffee brewer. Then, once water has been boiled to a specified temperature, gently pour a stream of hot water over the grind in a circular motion and then let gravity do its thing.
A couple of minutes later there will be a brilliantly tasting crisp cup of coffee that’s waiting to be enjoyed. As the saying goes; ‘good things come to those who wait’.
The pour-over method will allow you to:
- Expand your menu
- Promote your specialist coffees
- Showcase micro-lots
- Maximise your profits

- Hario Skerton mill – If you want to do things by hand, the is purposefully designed and easy to use.
- Hario V60 Dripper and filter papers – Whether you opt for glass or plastic, the signature curved ridged help funnel both water and coffee to the centre of the filter papers – an immense aid to extraction.
