Tea And The American Revolution

tea-party

On this day in 1773 a group, led by Sam Adams, congregated in Boston Harbour. Adams and company, collectively they were known as the Sons of Liberty, did their best to go unnoticed, meeting in the dead of night and concealing their identities.

The group scaled boarded three ships, the Dartmouth, the Eleanor, and the Beaver, and dumped case after case of tea overboard. The value of the imported tea that was lost that night has been estimated to be $18,000. More importantly, it was an act of defiance that put into motion the events that would bring about the American Revolution.

But why was tea targeted?

Cheese & Coffee – A Finnish Tradition

coffee5685

There are certain things that go perfectly well with a cup of coffee, such as a slice of carrot cake, a piece of biscotti or a dunkable digestive. But if you’re bored of the conventional wisdom when it comes to coffee’s accompaniments, why not try a slab of Finnish cheese?

Leipajuusto (or juustoleipa as it is known in some quarters) is a traditional Finnish cheese that is typically made from cow’s beestings, though reindeer or goat’s milk may also be used. Once set, the cheese is then grilled. By being exposed to heat, the cheese takes on a mottled complexion which accounts for its English-language nickname of ‘bread cheese’.

2015 Colombia (North) Cup of Excellence – Results

ColombiaCOE

Colombian coffee has a reputation for being some of the best in the world. Like many countries situated inside the bean belt the climate is ideal for the careful cultivation of the coffee crop, but Colombia also has the benefit of some truly exceptional topography.

The result is a constant wave of fantastic coffee coming from the northern parts of South America. But it isn’t just down to the climate or mountainous terrain or advantageous soils: It’s down to the skill of the farmers and the diversity of crop, growing and processing methods that they have adopted over the years.

That’s why we had such a problem finding the right Colombian coffee to offer in our Speciality Range – not that we’re complaining! With so many different varieties to choose from, you can be really spoilt for choice when searching for a Colombian.

Can Coffee Help You Live Longer?

EspressoCup-Beans

Nicolas Flamel was a French scribe who, if the legend is to be believed, discovered the Philosopher’s Stone. As well as being able to turn common, base metals in gold, the alchemical substance is also capable of extending one’s life.

Flamel certainly did exist (he was born in the French commune of Pontoise and died, in 1418, in Paris), but there’s been no proof of the Philosopher’s Stone’s has ever been found.

However, a study, which was recently published in the journal Circulation, has found that people who drink a moderate amount of coffee tend to live longer.

So is coffee the Philosopher’s Stone? …continue reading Can Coffee Help You Live Longer?
