Colombian Asprotimana La Esperanza
This is the second piece, of four, in our series profiling our initial batch of season coffees. Sold under the banner of our speciality coffee range, these offerings have been sourced from the best plantations and growing regions that the world has to offer and as such, they’re only available for a limited time.
Today, we’re taking a closer look at our Colombian Asprotimana La Esperanza. It’s a beautiful bean that’s characterised by berries and a syrupy sweetness.
Colombian Asprotimana La Esperanza
The Asprotimana cooperative was formed in 2001 when 32 producers came together to improve their skills and create something better for themselves, their families and the local area.
Asprotimana Cooperative
The villages and settlements surrounding the small town of Timana had, for a large part of their existence, known nothing but strife. Located on the slopes of the Cordillera Central in the Colombian Andes, Timana peered out over its neighbours and afforded anybody who was there a mind-blowing view of the region. Unfortunately, everybody wanted to control it. Local tribes vied for supremacy, as too did the Spanish conquistadors who soon claimed the land as their own. More recently areas within the Huila province, including Timana, saw a large displacement of their population as the economic downturn hit, forcing many to move away to find work. Those that left had nothing of note to survive upon.
To counter this constant narrative of turmoil, Robinson Figueroa and a handful of other local farms banded together to create a cooperative.
It not only survived. It flourished.
In the cup
This selection is taken from Figueroa’s own farm, La Esperanza. situated at an average altitude of 1,700m, the beans are carefully grown before being wet processed and sun dried. And as the region has long been perceived to be one of the best growing regions in Colombia, the dedication that Figueroa and his staff put into nurturing this coffee means that it is something special.
…a wonderfully delicate coffee with a medium body that is bursting with strawberry and raspberry flavours.
Caffe Society’s super secret tasting team
Expect a delicate coffee that is bursting with berry fruit flavours such as strawberries and raspberries that is finished off with a sticky, syrupy sweetness. This is a perfect coffee to serve during summer, or to offer alongside a slice of fruit cake.
For best results we advise you to brew this through a filter or an AeroPress, though it can also be used through an espresso machine.
