Expresso, Espresso or Epresso Coffee?
There are a lot of words that people struggle to spell correctly. Sherbert instead of Sherbet, Barbeque instead of Barbecue and Desert instead of Dessert. It’s easy to do, but this one is a mis-spelling that we can really relate to!
Possibly one of the most delicious creations on earth, Espresso is the Italian method of forcing a small amount of nearly boiling water through finely ground coffee beans, at high pressure.
It originated in Milan, Italy in the 1900’s, and is the thicker, stronger flavoured coffee that has crema on top (the thin layer of creamy foam). It features a more concentrated flavour and aroma due to the way that it is brewed.
Epresso
Simply missing the “S”, Epresso is a very common mis-spelling of Espresso. We’re not sure where this spelling comes from, it could be related to another coffee-brewing product called the AeroPress, both having the word Press in them.
Expresso
This one replaces the “S” for an X. This one could be spelled this way due to the “Express” way in that an Espresso is delivered. It’s a fast method of brewing delicious coffee, and this could be a reason why it’s often spelled this way.
Another theory is that its related to the word “Exprimere”. This word is related to our word express and means “to press or squeeze out” in Latin.
This one is used enough that it’s in the dictionary as a less common variant of “Espresso”.
