Caffeine – the game

Caffeine

“The lights flicker as if somebody is toying with a fundamental binary code housed somewhere in the electrical circuit. But that would be impossible, wouldn’t it? The most reasonable answer would be to suggest that there’s an errant wire somewhere, but all logic has been lost a long time ago. Down the corridor, vaguely illuminated for a split-second before it plunges into darkness once more, there’s a note. The inscription on it can be barely made out. ‘Coffee this way,’ it reads.

“Coffee.

“Coffee!”

Caffeine

Imagine an alternate future – one that is actually quite feasible when you think about it – where the entire human race has developed a caffeine addiction – so much so that people regularly venture off into space to procure and mine minerals that can be used to create a synthetic version of it. And, to make matters worse, despite being low on caffeine you’re trapped on a spaceship that’s completely empty, and you’ve lost your memory.

A terrifying prospect undoubtedly, and a premise that is going to form the basis of a video game that we believe is due for release next year.

Entitled Caffeine the science-fiction survival horror creation is the brainchild of one Dylan Browne – it’s also his first ever game too.

“Once people liked the look of it, I started to form an idea of a cool game,” said the Australian, who created the initial level as part of an online course.

“As a crazed coffee drinking, I thought it would be cool to have the story to be focused on caffeine as an addiction…the rest fell into place.”

There’s also a question at the heart of the game that forces you to wonder what is fake and what is real because “the whole [space] station is full of caffeine, and it is reacting,” not to mention that your character is on a monumental caffeine crash. As Cnet ask, ‘just how far can you trust your own perception? Not to mention that of the space station!

It looks pretty good and considering coffee is due to play a part in the game, we think we’ll give it a try! Though we might just leave the lights on….
