Blue latte: A Vegan algae alternative
The coffee scene in Australia is really throwing up some strange and wonderful concoctions as of late.
We’ve had turmeric lattes, rainbow lattes and now the Blue latte.
Smelling like seaweed and coming in at approximately £4.60 each, this is definitely more Blue Monday than Eiffel 65.
But what on earth goes into a latte to make it such a vibrant blue colour?
Ginger, lemon, coconut milk, agave and blue algae powder make up the Melbourne made Vegan drink. Yes, that’s right. It’s not technically a coffee.
Melbourne’s Matcha Mylkbar have only begun serving the drink, with the key blue algae ingredient costing as much as £1.75 per gram. But the antioxidant properties are said to be the reason this drink is even selling at all.
We’re surprised that something that reportedly “smells like seaweed” would sell at all, but we suppose the look is enough for some people to want to at least try the drink, it does make for a very pretty Instagram picture!
Mylkbar have joined the trailblazing Australian coffee scene with a signature smurf latte, and this drink, if anything, is going to put them on the map at least. We’re not sure it’s quite as good as the flat white, but at the very least we’d give it a taste.
The Australian coffee outlet doesn’t just offer a ‘smurf latte’, their menu is a strange combination of the weird and wonderful, and includes a beetroot latte, mushroom latte, turmeric latte and apple pie latte.
We’re not convinced by the first two options, but that apple pie latte sounds interesting…
