Almost half of pub-goers won’t return if pub serves bad coffee

Research by the Allegra World Coffee Portal has found that pubs serving sub-standard quality coffee are increasingly likely to lose repeat customers.

Almost half (44%) of those surveyed stated that quality of coffee is the biggest determining factor on whether they will return to a pub or bar.

This opens up significant opportunities for the pub and bar market to seriously up their game, especially as pubs are now slowly being overtaken by coffee shops on the high street.

Conducting the survey on 750 consumers, the study revealed that more than a third (33%) of the British public buy coffee out of the home at least four times per week and almost two-thirds are willing to pay £2.99 for a quality cup of coffee.

That’s some serious money your pub or bar could be capitalising on with a proper strategy and coffee-making solution in place.

It wasn’t just these tidbits of info that the research has unearthed. Allegra also found that:

  • More than a quarter of those surveyed would visit a pub or bar for their morning coffee if these establishments were open earlier and provided a quality coffee alternative.
  • Just short of two-thirds (63%) of those responding believed that a high-quality cup of coffee at the end of a meal made a massive difference between a good quality experience and a truly great one.
  • Almost a third of diners (31%) often order coffee instead of a dessert after a main meal when eating out.
  • Nearly half (44%) of those consumers eat out at least once a week.

Of course, if you’re serving substandard or poor quality coffee, this could (pun intended) leave a bad taste in the mouth of many of your drinkers and diners.

Chairman of the British Institute of Innkeeping, Anthony Pender, told The Caterer: “Coffee is the on-trend drink of today – of that there can be no doubt. More than a third of consumers buy coffee out of home at least four times per week. This isn’t a fad – coffee is here to stay. For pub and bar operators looking to invest in their future, their business, and grow their customer base, coffee is a revenue generator like no other. The findings in this report highlight key opportunities that operators should pay attention to if they are going to take advantage of this revenue stream.”
